Supporting & Mentoring Youths
Each year, Carion Fenn Foundation will select 10 Youths who will go through our Alex Monaghan Youth Program, as a group, the team will work together through a structured 40 hour program to acquire the hours required to graduate from high school. Youths looking to give back to the community by volunteering their time to help support the community can request to work with our organization.
In recognition of Mental Health Awareness Month in the City of Pickering that is being observed in November, with the overall objective of raising awareness of mental health issues in our community and mobilizing efforts in support of mental health, and of putting a face to mental illness, I wanted to share Alex’s story. As many of you know, we tragically lost my son Alex to suicide on April 1, 2018. Alex was 27. Karen O'Brien. Learn more<click here>
Our Youths take part in visiting Mayor Kevin Ashe, City of Pickering to learn about the City of Pickering, being a mayor and what it takes to operate the most progressive City in Durham Region. Our program includes a visit to Queens Park, helping to plan our projects and learning about Provincial Parliament. Youths engage in a variety of activities to enrich their growth including helping our Ajax Food Network to distribute Food to the Community, feeding the homeless, Flag Raising, Community Outreach, and more.
Our Program begins July to December each year, consisting of meetings, field trips, mentorship, giving back to the community including food distribution, feedking the homeless; participation in the Mental Health Chat, Queens Park Mental Health Chat, community outreach, community supporting, and more. Members will have an official graduation at Queens Park, receiving a letter of support from our organization to help to get a job or get into college, Certificates of completion and the members with the highest hours are encouraged to join next year to help mentor the students.
Our Youths are honoured to have the opportunity to meet Mayor Kevin Ashe, City of Pickering Mayor, take a tour of his office, council chambers and learn about the city of pickering and what is is like to be mayor. Youths also have the chance to take pictures and ask questions to Mayor Ashe.
On November 1, 15, 22 & 29, 2024 5pm – 9pm, we are giving Youths the opportunity to get their hours to graduate from High School, by participating in our Alex Monaghan Youth Mental Health Chat in the City of Pickering at the Chestnut Hill Developments Recreation Complex. Youths are required to show up at 5pm, to help, participate in the event as a participant, and then helping after for an hour. We are trying to make it easier for Youths to accomplish their hours while gaining knowledgeable experiences. To qualify to get these hours, you must register for the Alex Monaghan Youth Menal Health Chat through our website for all 4 days. Go to our website, click on the “Mental Health” tab, then click on “Youth Mental Health Chat” or click on "Register Now". We are also looking for students to help distribute flyers in our communities to help promote our events as well as take part in other community outreach activities.
