In recognition of Mental Health Awareness Month in the City of Pickering that is being observed in November, with the overall objective of raising awareness of mental health issues in our community and mobilizing efforts in support of mental health, and of putting a face to mental illness, I wanted to share Alex’s story. As many of you know, we tragically lost my son Alex to suicide on April 1, 2018. Alex was 27. Durham Community Health Centre
Durham Community Health Centre (DCHC) is a registered, charitable organization that provides integrated, accessible, and equitable community based primary care, wellness services, and health education to Durham community members who face multiple barriers to their health and well-being. DCHC also provides equity-based programs and services that focus on priority populations such as Indigenous, Black, the 2SLGBTQI Community, Newcomers to Canada, Seniors, and Unattached patients, to name a few. DCHC ensures Durham community members receive not only sick care, but preventive care as well, enabling the community member to live longer at home. At DCHC, we are a team-based interprofessional group of staff including physicians, nurse practitioners, nurses, counselors, dietitians, outreach workers, medical secretaries, and other administrative staff. We always place every client at the centre of our approach to care, based on their needs. We address these needs through integrated clinical and wellness care and health education.

Roselyn Sagar-Lal, is the Manager of Development and Stakeholder Relations at Durham Community Health Centre. Located, in Oshawa but having a site in Pickering, DCHC provides access to equitable healthcare and education to priority populations in the Durham Region. Offering supports such as Primary Care, Counselling, Mental Health and Wellness, Diabetes Education, Child and Youth, Mobile Care, to Indigenous, Black, Senior, unattached, newcomers, Gender Care and much, much more. Our team provides integrated clinical and wellness care and see clients in the region but also connect them to resources in the community too. Roselyn works with the community partners to ensure that funding and awareness are achieved to help support these much needed programs.

My Journey with Bipolar
Christie Maingot is a creative entrepreneur based in the Greater Toronto Area in Canada. She is a mother of three beautiful star seeds, and comes from a huge family with a Trinidadian and Vincentian background. Her professional life varies as she is a Jill of all trades. She is an Actor, Stage Manager, Acting Coach, Production Assistant, and everything in between. At 17 she was diagnosed with bipolar 2 disorder and her mental wellness journey began. Despite this grim diagnosis she has received many awards and accolades. In 2015 she was selected as the Black Canadian Queen of Ajax, and was the first term scholarship recipient at Toronto Film School where she graduated in 2007. She began teaching Acting classes for children ages 5-17, at Act One school of Drama in Pickering, Ontario after her graduation. She has had various jobs in the film and theatre industry as it is very important to her to be passionate about what you do for your paycheck. Positive thinking has always been at the forefront of all Christie does. She leads with love and her will is to lead by example with her book, “ Change UR Mind, Change UR Life: A Pocketbook of Quotes."

Laure is not only a committed professional but also an accomplished Psychotherapist with her practice, "Winning with Wisdom" counselling services, which she has successfully run for five years. As the founder of this platform, Laure provides essential support and guidance to those in need, creating a safe space for healing and personal growth.
Kujenga Family Wellness Project
Nicole Perryman, is a Registered Social Worker, Play Therapist and Psychotherapist practicing in Durham Region. Nicole started her career supporting children, youth, and families in child welfare, social services and has worked within children's mental health, parental contact and parenting time assessments, youth involved in the criminal justice system, trauma centers, and education. Nicole is the CEO and co-founder of "Ifarada [eye -fa-ra-da] Centre for Excellence and Kujenga [cue-jenga]" Family Wellness organizations that provide culturally-informed and trauma-focused approaches for children, youth, adults, and families. She is an occasional professor, and field supervisor for students in social work, child and youth, and counseling psychology. She is also a principal equity consultant supporting organizations across Canada and Internationally on their equity journeys.
Nigel Wilson - Former Blue Jays Player
Nigel Wilson is a former professional baseball player who played both for the MLB and the International Pro Baseball League in Japan. Wilson primarily played as an outfielder as well as a designated hitter; which ultimately earned him much of his success. Wilson grew up in the Durham region and graduated from Ajax High School in 1988. Nigel was an all-around athlete; however, his passion was baseball. He attained great success in baseball very early in his adult life by turning Pro at the age of 16 when he got drafted by the Toronto Blue Jays & played for Team Canada. His talent and determination paved the way to a very prosperous baseball career. While in the MLB, in the 1992 expansion draft, the Florida Marlins chose Nigel as their first round, first pick draft choice. Other teams he played for were the Cincinnati Reds and the Cleveland Indians. Nigel expanded his overall baseball experience by participating in winter ball in places like Venezuela and Puerto Rico and finally in 1997 testing his talent on an international level; he signed a contract with the Nippon Ham Fighters in Japan.
