In recognition of Mental Health Awareness Month in the City of Pickering that is being observed in November, with the overall objective of raising awareness of mental health issues in our community and mobilizing efforts in support of mental health, and of putting a face to mental illness, I wanted to share Alex’s story. As many of you know, we tragically lost my son Alex to suicide on April 1, 2018. Alex was 27. Nicole Perryman, is a Registered Social Worker, Play Therapist and Psychotherapist practicing in Durham Region. Nicole started her career supporting children, youth, and families in child welfare, social services and has worked within children's mental health, parental contact and parenting time assessments, youth involved in the criminal justice system, trauma centers, and education. Nicole is the CEO and co-founder of "Ifarada [eye -fa-ra-da] Centre for Excellence and Kujenga [cue-jenga]" Family Wellness organizations that provide culturally-informed and trauma-focused approaches for children, youth, adults, and families. She is an occasional professor, and field supervisor for students in social work, child and youth, and counseling psychology. She is also a principal equity consultant supporting organizations across Canada and Internationally on their equity journeys.

Angini is a compassionate psychotherapist and social worker, with 15 + years of experience as therapist/counsellor, manager, and trainer. Angini combines her professional knowledge with personal insights based on her own experiences. Angini has been providing strengths based, client cantered, trauma informed counselling to clients and groups in a variety of settings. Angini works with issues of trauma, childhood trauma, anger management, and substance use along with anxiety and stress. Angini, as a person of colour originally from the Caribbean, is mindful of issues within the context of multiculturalism and diversity as well as stigmatization. Angini is a Registered Social Worker with the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers, and a member of the Ontario Association of Social Workers. Angini has a Master of Social Work degree from Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri, USA. Angini is an avid sailor and has been sailing and racing for many years. Angini also loves creating and has embraced the art of willow weaving and has created many unique pieces. Angini has seen the therapeutic elements of sailing and willow work as part of nature therapy which she has started incorporating into her clinical practice with clients.

Laure is a compassionate and dedicated individual with a background that reflects her unwavering commitment to the betterment of individuals and communities. With a degree in Criminology and a specialization as a Mental Health and Addictions Counselor, Laure has harnessed her knowledge and skills to make a profound impact on those she serves. Her journey began with a deep desire to make a difference, and this aspiration has shaped her remarkable career. Having worked with youth since 2012, Laure has been at the forefront of support for the younger generation. Her role at Covenant House in the Anti-Human Trafficking unit showcases her dedication to addressing the unique challenges faced by vulnerable youth. Laure's ability to connect with and uplift these young individuals has made her a true beacon of hope and a source of inspiration. Laure is not only a committed professional but also an accomplished Psychotherapist with her practice, "Winning with Wisdom" counselling services, which she has successfully run for five years.
Dr. Ian is a Chiropractor of 25 years registered to practice with the College of Chiropractors of Ontario. He graduated with a Doctorate of Chiropractic in 1993 from the Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College. He currently owns and operates Brain Therapy Clinic where we specialize in functional neurology, vestibular therapy, and postural correction as well as musculoskeletal and nervous system deficiencies. He has completed over 2700 hours of Ph.D. level neurology courses in traumatic brain injury and vestibular system therapies, specifically concussions, degenerative brain disease, headaches, balance and gait, vertigo and numerous brain-based conditions. In the past, Dr. Ian has taught worldwide on the Pettibon postural correction protocols, scoliosis, and TMJ, and over the last 5 years teaching other professions Functional Neurology and concussion management all over Canada.
Mariah Thomas is a former professional and national team basketball player who has a passion for holistic health and fitness. As a professional basketball player Mariah was selected to the 2017-18 Canadian National Development Team that traveled to Japan and China. She also represented Canada in various European countries such as Italy, Czech Republic and Romania for the 2019 FIBA 3 x 3 games. Mariah’s professional career consisted of traveling overseas to Spain, France and Ireland. These opportunities have allowed her to experience new cultures and meet amazing people, while honing her skills and personally developing as an athlete and business professional. As her athletic career came to an end Mariah took her elite skills and expertise off the court and into the gym where she became a certified personal and group fitness trainer, and pre and postnatal specialist. Mariah has always had a burning desire to help others achieve their goals, develop and enjoy life; this was the foundation of Enrich Fit, a company she designed to empower women through holistic health. While personal training served a valuable purpose for several years and although Mariah was able to help countless women achieve their wellness and fitness goals, she soon realized that she would need to take a new approach in order to effectively address all eight pillars of holistic health. To be able to help her clients discover and develop each pillar, achieve their personal goals and live meaningful lives, Mariah worked diligently to gain more knowledge, more experience, and more skills as a Maxwell certified life coach. Through life coaching, Mariah understands the importance of mindset and self-awareness in achieving success, and she uses her expertise to guide her clients in overcoming obstacles, realizing their full potential and living with purpose. Coach Mariah is dedicated to helping her clients develop a positive self-image and mindset, build confidence and set achievable goals. She draws upon her years of experience in basketball and coaching, along with faith-based principles to facilitate a transformational experience for her clients, helping them to develop an empowered, purposeful life.
